Should Schools Start Later to Reduce Drowsy Driving?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is recommending that schools start later, in order to combat drowsy driving accidents. The administration made its recommendation earlier this week at the 2017 Managing Fatigue Conference in San Diego.

According to the NHTSA report, drivers between the ages of 16 and 24 who were involved in crashes were almost twice as likely to driving drowsy, compared with drivers ages 40-59. Teenagers and young adults also reported falling asleep at the wheel more frequently than other age groups.

Will Public Safety Improve if Schools Start Later?

Start School Later, a nonprofit that advocates later start times for schools, contributed to the report. The group claims that later start times will allow students to get a healthy amount of sleep. In turn, they will contribute to improved public safety by reducing drowsy driving accidents.

“We know the importance of getting a good night’s sleep for driving safely. This is especially crucial for young drivers. Teenagers require more sleep and are the least experienced drivers on the road,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
