Rules of the Road for Bicyclists

If you are a bicyclist, you might feel like you have less right to be on the road than the motorists next to you. However, that simply is not true. Cyclists have rights on California roadways. In fact, your rights and responsibilities as a bike rider are very similar to those of motor vehicle drivers.

Of course, there are some specific rules bicyclists must follow to ensure their safety on the road and avoid an accident. Here are some rules of the road for bicyclists in California:

Where to Ride

  • Stay to the right. Cyclists should ride as close to the right side of the road as possible. Exceptions include when you are passing, preparing to turn left, avoiding a road hazard or approaching a right turn only lane.
  • Use the bike lane. If a bike lane is available, you must use it while riding. The same exceptions exist for this rule as the previous rule.
  • Ride with traffic. Always ride in the same direction as traffic.
  • Don’t ride on any freeways or expressways where bicycles are prohibited.
  • Cities vary on laws regarding bicyclists riding on sidewalks. Check your city’s ordinances before riding on the sidewalk.

Other Considerations for Bicyclists

  • Wear a helmet. Cyclists under the age of 18 are legally required to wear a helmet, but riders of any age should wear a helmet for safety.
  • Bicyclists cannot ride with earplugs or headphones covering both ears.
  • Riding under the influence of alcohol or drugs is illegal.
  • Cyclists must yield the right of way to pedestrians within crosswalks and within unmarked crosswalks at intersections.

“Every bicyclist should take the time to understand their rights and responsibilities on the road,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
