Pregnant Woman Loses Baby in Drunken Hit-and-Run

The drunk driver who seriously injured a pregnant woman and killed her unborn baby in a hit-and-run crash last June has been sentenced to 7 years in prison. A drunk driver stuck 27-year-old Lucrecia Vasquez’s Nissan Altima around 2 a.m. on June 5, 2016. The crash occurred at the intersection of Route 78 and Broadway in Escondido. A drunk driver, 33-year-old Jose Uriostegui, ran a red light in his Ford F-150. He then ran into Vasquez’s vehicle on the driver’s side.

Uriostegui attempted to flee the scene on foot. Fortunately, two witnesses chased him and held him until authorities arrived. The pregnant woman and her 24-year-old female passenger both required hospitalization for their injuries. Vasquez was admitted to Palomar Medical Center in critical condition. Her unborn son died in utero. Vasquez was six months pregnant at the time of the crash.

The victim underwent five surgeries for the internal bleeding she suffered. At the hearing in December, she told the judge she continues to struggle with mental trauma over the loss of her unborn son, Santiago. Uriostegui also told the court he accepts full responsibility for the deadly crash.
