Police Issue Nearly 200 Tickets for Distracted Driving in Hesperia

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department deputies issued nearly 200 tickets for distracted driving in Hesperia during a two-week enforcement span. The campaign is part of an ongoing effort against distracted driving in Hesperia.

Sheriff’s officials hope their enforcement efforts will help educate drivers on the dangers of distracted driving and encourage them to make better choices. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), distracted driving fatalities are on the rise. Last year, 3,179 people were killed in crashes in which distracted driving was involved, and another 431,000 were injured.

DUI enforcement efforts have helped to reduce the number of drinking and driving fatalities over the years, and law enforcement hopes enforcement will have a similar effect on distracted driving deaths.

In California, it is illegal to operate a handheld device while driving a vehicle. This law applies not only when the car is in motion, but when the driver is stopped at a red light or stop signs as well.

“We hope these enforcement efforts help drive home the importance of avoiding distractions while behind the wheel, and ultimately save lives,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
