Police Arrest Indio Man for Causing Drunk Driving Crash

A driver was arrested for drunk driving after crashing into a semi-truck in Coachella Friday morning. Police say 23-year-old Alejandro Sierra of Indio rear-ended the semi on Grapefruit Boulevard north of Mitchell Drive at 2:44 a.m. The collision sent the Toyota veering off the roadway and onto a nearby embankment.

When authorities arrived, Sierra was unconscious in the driver’s seat. Police were able to wake him and he was taken to a hospital for minor injuries. He was later arrested on suspicion of DUI. The semi-truck driver was not injured in the crash. The truck was not damaged, but the Toyota sustained major damage.

Drunk driving kills three people every two hours in the US. In 2010, more than 1.4 million drivers were arrested on suspicion of DUI. Drunk driving also takes a financial toll, costing Americans more than $37 billion every year.

“Driving under the influence continues to be a detriment on desert roadways. If you’re drinking, don’t get behind the wheel,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
