Oregon Woman Killed in I-10 Big Rig Crash
Oregon Woman Killed in I-10 Big Rig Crash

An Oregon woman was killed in a big rig crash on I-10 earlier this month. Police say a Kenworth big rig was traveling west on I-10 at 5:40 a.m. just east of Highway 111 when it struck a light pole and flipped over, spilling its cargo of PVC pipes. The truck landed on its roof next to the freeway.

The woman killed was 24-year-old Shyan Barnes of Bandon, Oregon. She was asleep in the truck’s cabin when the crash occurred, and California Highway Patrol (CHP) officials say she was unrestrained. She was pronounced dead at 7:15 a.m.

The driver, a 42-year-old man also from Bandon, Oregon, was rushed to Desert Regional Medical Center with unspecified injuries. Firefighters worked for an hour to free him from the overturned big rig after the crash. They also spent three hours cleaning up the PVC pipes that had spilled during the accident.

The cause of the big rig crash is still under investigation.

“These big rig crashes are so prevalent on our roads—we hear about a new one nearly every week. The bottom line is there is a lot of risk in driving these vehicles, and current industry regulations don’t seem to be preventing deadly crashes,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
