Safety guidelines for autonomous vehicles have finally been released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). With the rise of self-driving vehicles on the road, there has been much discussion of how these vehicles will be regulated. While the new guidelines are not official regulations, they offer some basic rules for autonomous vehicles.

The guidelines will require a 15-point safety assessment that vehicles will need to meet. These points include protecting consumer privacy and protecting the passenger during a crash. The NHTSA has also requested that states work together to develop uniform policies for autonomous vehicles.

Additionally, the NHTSA will have the authority to recall any self-driving vehicle that violates federal safety standards. As a whole, the announcement seems to be favorable toward automakers developing autonomous vehicles, and not aimed at trying to delay the progress being made toward self-driving cars.
