A woman was arrested after initiating a police chase and standoff that shut down I-10 for hours last month. California Highway Patrol (CHP) officials tried to pull over the driver of a motor home on eastbound I-10 near Highway 62 after receiving a report of reckless driving around 9 a.m. Sunday, January 15. According to the witness, the motor home was traveling at over 100 mph. The driver, 53-year old Imelda Sortino of San Diego, refused to pull over when officers attempted a traffic stop.

Sortino led police on a pursuit down eastbound I-10. Officers set up a spike strip on the freeway east of Dillon Road, which damaged the vehicle’s tires. The police pursuit continued another 40 miles before the motor home came to a stop west of Eagle Mountain Road.

The driver still refused to exit the vehicle, causing police to shut down all lanes of I-10 around 10:30 a.m. Police tried several methods to get the driver to exit the motor home, but they eventually entered the vehicle and arrested Sortino for failure to yield.

Police Chase Closes I-10 for Hours

Westbound lanes reopened around 1:30 p.m., while eastbound lanes remained closed until about 2 p.m. Traffic remained backed up in both directions until about 4 p.m. The incident is still under investigation, but alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors.

“There is no excuse for failing to yield and putting lives in danger by initiating a police chase. The driver must be held accountable for her reckless behavior behind the wheel,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
