Police arrested the man responsible for a violent Mardi Gras parade crash that injured 28 people in New Orleans Saturday. The crash occurred at 6:42 p.m. at the intersection of Orleans Avenue and Carollton Avenue, where a crowd had gathered for the Krewe of Endymion Parade.

Authorities later arrested 25-year-old Neilson Rizzuto on charges including negligent vehicular injuring and hit-and-run causing serious injury. According to police, the driver’s blood alcohol content (BAC) was .232, nearly three times the legal limit.

Of the 28 injured, 21 people were hospitalized. At least stayed in the hospital overnight for moderate to serious injuries. The victims ranged from 1 year old to mid-50s.

The judge set Rizzuto’s bail at $125,000. If he is released on bond, he will be placed under house arrest.

12 Injured in Alabama Parade Crash

Another Mardi Gras parade crash occurred Tuesday in Gulf Shores, Alabama. An SUV plowed into members of a high school band, injuring 12 students. A 73-year-old man caused the accident. Police do not suspect drugs or alcohol as factors. The driver stayed at the scene to cooperate with the investigation. All 12 injured students received treatment at local hospitals. One student with major injuries was later airlifted to a hospital in Mobile, Alabama.
