Infant Injuries from Nursery Products on the Rise

Infant injuries have risen in recent years, and nursery products might be to blame. According to a study published in the American Academy of Pediatrics, there has been a 23.7% rise in injuries to young children due to nursery products between 2003 and 2011. Furthermore, a child 3 years or younger is injured is treated in an emergency room for a nursery product-related injury every eight minutes.

Most of the injuries reported were head, face and neck injuries. About 80% of the injuries occurred after the infants fell. Most of these accidents also occurred at home.

Is Popularity of Nursery Products Contributing to Infant Injuries?

According to Jerri Rose, assistant professor of pediatric emergency medicine at Case Western Reserve University Medical School, injuries to the head and neck are not uncommon for babies. Since they have large heads and lack advanced motor skills, these injuries are fairly normal. However, the increase in the number of infant injuries in recent years is likely a result of an increase in nursery products available. These products include baby carriers, strollers, walkers and exercisers. Another reason for the increase could be the rise in concussion awareness by parents and doctors.

What can parents do to keep their young children safe? The study authors suggest these four tips:

Research the product before purchasing to ensure it is appropriate for your child.

  1. Check for recalls on the Consumer Product Safety Commission website.
  2. Register the product with the company, so you receive alerts of any issues or recalls.
  3. Read the manual to familiarize yourself with the product and gain awareness of any safety risks.

“Parents, please take this research to heart and take the extra steps to ensure your child is safe whenever using nursery products,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
