Indio Roads Becoming More Bicycle Friendly

The city of Indio is working on a project to make their roads more bicycle friendly. The project includes creating bike lanes, widening the road and filling gaps in the sidewalks. Mayor Michael Wilson has stated that the improvements will make roads safer for bicyclists, as well as encourage increased biking, to help reduce traffic and improve air quality.

Bike Lanes will Help with Concert Traffic

Moreover, creating more bicycle friendly roadways will also help with traffic associated with the city’s popular music festivals. Because of the traffic, bicycling has become a popular method for getting to the concert venue for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, as well as Stagecoach Country Music Festival.

In May, work will begin to add bicycle lanes to Avenue 48. The project will take place from Jefferson Street to Calle Diamante, and from Oasis Street to Jackson Street. Since the concerts are in April, concertgoers won’t be able to take advantage of the new lanes until 2019. However, Indio residents will be able to utilize the new lanes sooner. Lanes for Avenue 48 should be complete this July.

Also up for bicycle improvements is a stretch of Calhoun Street from Highway 111 to Dr. Carreon Boulevard. That project should be complete in December 2018.

“We are glad the city is working to encourage bicycling as a safe and practical mode of transportation,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
