Holiday Travel Expected to Increase 3% from Last Year

According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), holiday travel from Christmas through New Years is expected to increase by 3% from last year. Nearly 8.2 million Southern California residents plan to travel at least 50 miles from home between Dec. 23 and Jan. 1. A majority of California travelers will be traveling by car.

AAA credits a favorable economy and lower travel costs with the increase in holiday travel, in California and across the U.S. Roughly 107 million Americans are expected to travel this year, compared with 104 million last year.

Palm Springs is Popular Holiday Destination

Palm Springs is behind only San Francisco and San Diego as the most popular destination for Southern California travelers. Residents should anticipate increased traffic during peak times. Nationally, the worst time to be on the road is Dec. 22 between 3 and 5 p.m.

With millions of people on the roads during the holiday, it is vital that drivers practice safe driving habits. Read over our 10 tips for safe holiday travel before you get behind the wheel this Christmas break.
