Hesperia Woman Killed in Dump Truck Crash on 15 Freeway

A driver was killed in a dump truck crash in Rancho Cucamonga Thursday. Police say Faith Hawkins of Hesperia was driving south on the 15 Freeway at 11:13 a.m. when the dump truck driver changed lanes and struck Hawkins’ vehicle. The crash sent her car spinning and Hawkins was ejected onto the roadway. The dump truck driver has been identified as Jose Castillo of Bloomington.

Hawkins was rushed to San Antonio Community Hospital, where she passed away from her injuries. Police issued a SigAlert at 11:19 a.m. Traffic was slowed to a standstill between the 210 interchange and the Summit Avenue exit while the scene was cleared. Northbound lanes were also backed up to the Base Line exit. The crash remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Changing lanes on the freeway can be dangerous if done improperly. Here are some tips for changing lanes safely:

  1. Always use your turn signal.
  2. Check your rearview mirror and side mirrors.
  3. Don’t forget to check your blind spot.
  4. If you are sure the lane change is safe, get over carefully.
  5. Turn off your signal once you have safely changed lanes.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family. Trucks have significant blind spots, and drivers need to be extremely cautious when changing lanes on the freeway,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
