Hazing Causes Students Physical and Emotional Harm

Hazing rituals have become commonplace in high school and college campuses across the country. Sadly, these degrading rites of passage often result in physical injuries and emotional trauma.

What is Hazing?

Hazing affects more than half of college students, and most of the time it goes unreported. Moreover, 47% of students experience hazing prior to entering college. Hazing constitutes any activity required of someone joining or participating in a group that humiliates, degrades, abuses or endangers them. Even if a person is willingly participating, the activity is still considered hazing. Most universities have policies against hazing, and 44 states have laws against hazing.

Fraternity Sued for Hazing Incident

Last week, a fraternity at Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon was sued for a hazing incident that resulted in a 20-year-old student losing his right eye. Kellen Johansen participated in an initiation party for Pi Kappa Alpha in April last year, which consisted of drinking alcohol, streaking across the campus and retrieving illegal fireworks.

According to the lawsuit, the president of the fraternity discharged the fireworks. However, the fireworks failed to go up and exploded on the ground. Johansen suffered serious injuries from the explosion that resulted in the surgical removal of his eye. The suit seeks $8.47 million for Johansen’s “life-altering” injury.
