Exploding Takata Airbag Kills Florida Man Working on Car

Honda has confirmed the 12th death to result from an exploding Takata airbag occurred last year in Florida. A man was working inside a 2001 Honda Accord when the airbag ruptured and killed him. The incident occurred on June 18, 2016, at a private residence in Hialeah, Florida. Honda says the man was not the owner of the vehicle.

According to Honda, the vehicle was on, so the airbag would have been ready to deploy in a crash. However, it is unknown what caused the airbag to inflate since there was no crash. The man had taken apart the center console, but it is unclear what he was working on.

The police photos of the incident show the ruptured air bag inflator. The exploding Takata airbag shot shrapnel out at the victim. This is the same issue that has caused 11 other deaths and many more injuries. The difference in this case is that no crash took place. Authorities are still perplexed as to why the airbag inflated.

Honda Sent Car Owner 12 Recall Notices

Honda says multiple owners of the Accord were mailed 12 recall notices over seven years to have the airbags fixed. The notices went unheeded. Laboratory tests show the airbags in a 2001 Honda Accord have a 50% chance of rupturing in a crash. Owners of these high risk vehicles are urged to have their vehicles repaired at their dealership as soon as possible.

“If you have one of these affected vehicles, please don’t delay any longer in getting it repaired. Your life could be at stake,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
