Cathedral City Man Facing DUI Manslaughter Charge to Make Plea
July 5, 2011
A 49-year-old man from Cathedral City, California, is being arraigned today on a felony manslaughter charge after a May 21 accident in which the man crashed his Ford Expedition, killing his 55-year-old male passenger and critically injuring himself.
The driver’s arraignment has been on the court schedule seven times but the man’s medical condition has prevented him from being transported to court thus far, reports MyDesert.com.
Police suspect that the man was speeding northbound on Cathedral Canyon Drive when he lost control of his vehicle near the intersection of Cathedral Canyon and Dinah Shore. The SUV jumped a curb and then smashed into a tree and a stone wall. The man told officers that he had been drinking beer, and police report smelling alcohol on his breath in addition to noting slurred speech.
Both men had to be cut from the vehicle.
MyDesert.com reports that if convicted of felony DUI gross vehicular manslaughter the man could face between four and 10 years in prison.
