Drunk Driver Kills 15-Year-Old Pedestrian

A 15-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in Hesperia Thursday morning. Police have identified the victim as Moises Chequete of Hesperia. The teenager was walking north on Santa Fe Avenue in a designated bike lane when he was struck from behind by a blue 1992 Chevrolet Corsica. The driver then fled the scene. The pedestrian crash occurred around 11:30 a.m.

Emergency responders rushed Chequete to Desert Valley Hospital in critical condition. Despite life-saving efforts, the teen passed away shortly after in the emergency room.

Witnesses Help Police Locate Hit-and-Run Suspect

A witnessed followed the hit-and-run suspect and helped lead officers to his location. Police then arrested Benjamin Harrity at C Avenue and Yucca Street. According to deputies, the driver was under the influence when he struck the 15-year-old pedestrian. They arrested Harrity for felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter.

Police are still investigating the fatal crash. Anyone with information can contact the Hesperia Sheriff’s Station at (760) 947-1500.
