What Caused Fatal Rollover Crash in Hesperia?

A 5-year-old boy was killed in a rollover crash in Hesperia earlier this month. The crash occurred just before 3:30 a.m. on Ranchero Road east of the I-15 intersection. When police arrived they found a Ford Expedition on its side at the bottom of an embankment on the south side of the road.

Five people were in the vehicle at the time of the crash. The 5-year-old died from his injuries at the scene. Three other children, an 11-year-old child and infant twins, were airlifted to Loma Linda Medical Center for serious injuries. The driver of the Expedition, Raymond Ortega, refused medical treatment.

The investigation, conducted by the Major Accident Investigation Team, determined the Expedition was traveling east on Ranchero Road when the driver struck the curb, causing the vehicle to skid to the south side of the road and overturn down the embankment.

Ranchero Road was shut down between Santa Fe and Danbury Avenue until 12:30 p.m. while police investigated the rollover crash.
