San Diego Man Killed In I-10 Crash Outside Palm Springs
December 8, 2011
A San Diego, California, man died last Thursday after being involved in a single vehicle car crash near North Palm Springs. According to Sign On San Diego, the accident occurred along Whitewater Canyon Road at around 10:15 AM, near the San Gorgonio Pass Windmill Farm.
Authorities with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) stated that the man was driving east along Interstate-10, when for an unknown reason he began to veer off the road. The driver over-corrected once he realized he had gone off the highway, which caused the vehicle to rollover before screeching to a halt. The Riverside County Coroner’s Office and CHP confirmed that the victim died at the scene. The crash is still under investigation by the CHP.
New statistics by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that larger vehicles with higher suspension systems, such as SUV’s and trucks, are more likely to rollover in the event of an accident. Also, more passengers–meaning more weight–can be a contributing factor to a rollover accident as well. The most disturbing finding the agency uncovered, though, was that 75 percent of all rollover fatalities were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.
