Coachella Valley Law Enforement Targets Speeding Truckers

February 2, 2012

Truckers along I-10 will be under heavy scrutiny for the next few days as law enforcement in the area cracks down on moving violations made by commercial vehicles in the Coachella Valley. Reports by KESQ News, the Desert Hills Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Facility and other law enforcement agencies will be targeting speeding truck drivers in areas with high instances of accidents in an effort to curb the growing number of collisions involving commercial vehicles.

The Coachella valley area saw a dramatic rise in the number of commercial vehicle collisions this past year. Statistics show that 152 accidents involving large trucks happened in the area last year alone. That number is up from 120 the year before. Data also indicates that five people died, dozens of others were injured, and thousands of dollars worth of man-hours and materials as a result of commercial vehicle collisions.

Officers will be using a saturation patrol method, as well as the latest in speed-clocking technology to watch for and stop speeding truckers. This method has proven effective in the past at reducing speed and accidents on highways across the country.

The California truck accident attorneys with the Walter Clark Legal Group understand the dangers that these large speeding trucks can pose to other vehicles on the road. Boy’s Ear Bitten Off During Moreno Valley Dog Attack

January 26, 2012

A Moreno Valley, California, woman and her male child were attacked by a dog in a residential area on Tuesday. According to reports from KPSP 2 News, the dog bit the child’s ear off during the attack.

Reports of the attack from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office say that the accident happened just after 11:30 AM outside of a home on Indian Street, south of Myers Avenue. It was there that police say the dog was able to escape from the owner’s control and attack the woman and child. The near 120-pound mastiff pounced on the boy and began to gnaw at the back of his head, tearing the 6-year-old’s ear off. The mother attempted to fight the dog off and was bitten on the back.

The pair was rushed to a local hospital where doctors were able to reattach the boy’s ear. The dog was seized by animal control and may now be put down.

Insurance companies say that dog bites are a growing problem in our country. The state of California led the nation in the number of dog bites with roughly 369 in 2010, while the cost to the victim averaged around $25,000.

This is why the California dog bite injury lawyers with the Walter Clark Legal Group would advise you not to hesitate contacting an attorney if you are struggling with medical bills from dog bite injuries that happened at no fault of your own.

DUI Checkpoints Scheduled For Rancho Mirage Friday Night

January 19, 2012

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department will not say where, but have confirmed that they will be conducting DUI checkpoints across the city Friday night. An article released by The Desert Sun says that the operation will happen between 8:00 PM tomorrow night and 3:00 AM Saturday morning.

Sgt. Dave Adams, spokesman for the Department, added that in addition to looking for intoxicated drivers, Deputies would also be checking licenses to ensure they are valid.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles (CDMV) says that there has been a steady increase in the number of DUI offenses the state has seen in the last five years. There was a 13.5% increase in the number of DUI charges and a 8.3% increase in the number of DUI-related accidents between the years of 2002 and 2007. In that final year, it is estimated that drunk drivers in the state of California alone killed more than 2,200 people. That is more than double the number of casualties US troops saw in the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars.

Due to the growing problem, the CDMV advises those injured in accidents caused by drunk drivers to pursue civil cases against offenders in order to receive compensation for multiple reasons.

Labor Firm Fined $74,125 For Farm Worker’s Death

January 12, 2012

A California labor contracting company was fined Wednesday for their part in the death of a worker who overheated this summer. According to City News Service, the company failed to train employees and supervisors on how to identify and treat symptoms of heat illness and did not have emergency procedures in place to safeguard employees.

Investigators say the incident occurred on July 7th 2011. It was a hot day with the mercury rising to nearly 102 degrees. Humidity only compounded the heat in which the 47-year-old farm hand was lifting 40 pound boxes of cantaloupes onto the back of a truck. The worker suffered cardiac arrest from the heat and collapsed that afternoon. He was pronounced dead hours later at an area hospital.

The director for the Department of Industrial Relations’ Occupational Safety and Health division, Christine Baker, said that the consulting firm responsible for the worker was fined $74,125 by the state.

Unfortunately, the deceased worker’s family will never see a penny of that money. The family would have to file a civil wrongful death lawsuit against the company in order to receive any kind of compensation for their loss.

Often times the process of filing a wrongful death claim can be confusing and complicated. That is why the California wrongful death attorneys with the Walter Clark Legal Group are here to help. If you have wrongfully lost a loved one, Call us today to discuss your case further.

Pedestrian Accidents Prompt Californians To Examine Crosswalk Safety

January 5, 2012

A man was killed Thursday morning in Palm Springs, California, after being hit by a meat truck while crossing the street in a crosswalk. According to KPSP 2 News, the accident occurred at around 8:04 AM at the corner of North Palm Canyon Drive and Racquet Club Road.

A spokesperson for the Palm Springs police department, Sergeant Paul Abshire, stated that an Isuzu delivery truck was driving southbound along North Palm Canyon Drive and struck the man who was crossing the street. Police arrived at the scene and found the victim in the middle of the road with severe injuries. He was then transported to Desert Regional Medical Center, where he later died.

Arguments on both sides of the debate have been heard on local and state levels as to whether or not to install lights at California crosswalks. The public was made aware of the problem after a string of incidents involving young people across the state being struck by vehicles at crosswalks. Most recently, a 16-year-old female Arcadia, California, high school student was killed after being hit in a crosswalk on her way to school.

The California personal injury lawyers with the Water Clark Legal Group would like to remind motorists to yield to pedestrians at crosswalks. It is also important for pedestrians to remember to always use crosswalks and wait for your signals to cross. Being mindful of your surroundings is vital to keeping you and others around you safe.

Third Infant Infected With Rare Bacteria, Formula Not To Blame

December 29, 2011

The news that a third infant has reportedly been infected by a rare, but deadly, bacteria have federal health inspectors, manufacturers of infant formula, and retailers alike baffled. CNN News reported yesterday that the bacterium, known as Chronobacter, has been linked in the past to the powdered milk formula fed to infants, but multiple tests of suspected formula have come back negative.

The test results are prompting experts to scrutinize other environmental factors the children could have been exposed to. Not only is the preparation of the formula being inspected, but also the water used, as well as baby clothes and bedding.

The newest case, involving an Oklahoma baby, is the third case in recent weeks across the country. News of a Missouri baby that died from the infection two weeks ago prompted retailers to pull formula off shelves as a precaution.

Chronobacter is a dangerous and deadly bacterium, which is commonly found in our normal environment. An infection in humans is deadly in 40 percent of all cases, and survivors may suffer from severe neurological problems as a result of the infection.

The California defective product attorneys with the Walter Clark Legal Group urge parents feeding their infants formula to practice extra hygiene caution until the root of these infections is discovered. Make sure formula is given to the child at the correct temperatures and cleaning instructions are followed with bottles after feeding time.

One Killed, Another Critically Injured In I-10 Car Crash

December 1, 2011

An accident Thursday morning along a stretch of Interstate-10 has left one person dead and another critically injured. KPSP Channel 2 News reported earlier today that the crash occurred just after 10:20 this morning, east of Whitewater Road in Riverside County.

The accident happened when the driver of a minivan lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll several times and hit two other vehicles before screeching to a halt. California Highway Patrol investigators say when rescue crews arrived at the scene, they found the minivan on its side and proceeded to free the two passengers from the wreckage.

Paramedics attempted to transport both passengers to an area hospital; however, one of the victims died before they could arrive. The condition of another driver who was involved in the crash has not yet been determined either.

Investigators are still working to determine fault and cause in the crash.

Data from the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that California has the fourth deadliest highways in the nation. Between 2004 and 2008, 437 fatal accidents were reported along the state’s highways with 506 actual deaths.

Yucca Valley Woman Killed Crossing the Street

November 10, 2011

A Yucca Valley, California, woman was killed Monday night as she attempted to walk across a busy highway and was struck by three vehicles. According to KESQ News, police are searching for the driver of the third vehicle who fled the scene.

Authorities say the accident happened at around 6:40 in the evening on State Route 62. They believe the incident happened when the woman in dark clothing walked out in front of a car driven by a Rancho Mirage resident. The driver did not have time to stop, and accidentally hit the woman. By the time paramedics arrived, the 54-year-old female had died at the scene.

Witnesses reported that after the initial impact, two other vehicles struck the woman as she lay in the road. The driver of the second vehicle stopped; however, the driver of the third vehicle fled the scene. Police are now asking for any assistance they can get from the public to track the driver down. They say anyone with any information is asked to call the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department at (760) 366-4175.

The California Car Accident Lawyers at the Walter Clark Legal Group would like to take this opportunity to remind pedestrians that it’s darker outside much earlier since the time change and urge you to dress in light colored or reflective clothing when walking or running on streets after dark. It may also be of benefit to carry a small flashlight or headlamp with you to improve your visibility for drivers.
