California Roadways in Desperate Need of Maintenance

While the state’s recent rainstorms have helped lift the drought, they have also shed light on the poor condition of California roadways. The damage caused by adverse weather since the beginning of the year has now racked up a grand total of $866 million in costs. This damage makes 2017 the most expensive year for the state’s road system in 20 years.

Years of Neglect Exhibited by Sad State of California Roadways

However, rain and snow storms are not solely responsible for the poor state of California’s roads. According to Caltrans, years of neglect combined with this year’s storms have revealed the state’s desperate need for highway maintenance. The state highway system has been afflicted with 400 sinkholes, downed trees and mudslides, just this year.

The state’s poor handling of necessary road maintenance has shifted the responsibilities of repairs to local governments. Governor Jerry Brown is looking to help solve this problem by raising funds for road repairs at the state level. Last week, he signed a plan into law to raise $52 billion for roadway maintenance. The money will come from a 12 cent gas tax and increased vehicle fees.

“Poor roadway conditions can have a myriad of consequences. Not only do they pose a safety hazard for drivers, but they can also negatively impact the state’s economy, if conditions are bad enough to deter the transportation of goods. Investing in safer roads is in the best interest of every Californian,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
