Two bicyclists suffered injuries in a Sky Valley hit-and-run Saturday night. The collision occurred around 7:30 p.m. on Dillon Road east of Thousand Palms Canyon Road. A man and a 10-year-old boy were riding bicycles down the right shoulder of Dillon Road when a vehicle drifted off the road and struck them.

The driver fled the scene after causing the crash. Both bicyclists were taken to Desert Regional Medical Center for injuries. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is investigating the Sky Valley hit-and-run.

Residents Concerned About Thousand Palms Canyon Road Safety

Just a few ago, Sky Valley residents expressed concern about the safety of bicyclists on Thousand Palms Canyon Road. However, government officials told KESQ that constructing bike lanes along the road would be a long-term project with many costs to consider. While the transportation department received funding for safety improvements on the road, those plans do not include explicitly marked bike lanes. Instead, the project will provide paved shoulders that will not be specifically marked as bike lanes.

“Regardless of whether the roads are safe for bicyclists, there is no excuse for fleeing the scene of an accident. Hopefully police are able to quickly locate the hit-and-run suspect,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
