Bicyclist and Pedestrian Safety Improvements Coming to Coachella Valley
Bicyclist and Pedestrian Safety Improvements Coming to Coachella Valley

A bicyclist and pedestrian both died this past week after being struck by vehicles in Coachella Valley. The fatal accidents reflect a devastating upward trend of pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities in the area over the past year and a half. In 2016, 29 people were killed after being struck by vehicles in the Coachella Valley.

On Sunday, June 18, a pedestrian was struck in the intersection of North Sunrise Way and East Vista Chino. Emergency responders then rushed the man, identified as 62-year-old John Palladino, to the hospital with serious injuries. Police say a westbound vehicle struck Palladino, who was not in a marked crosswalk. However, they do not suspect alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash.

Then around 8 a.m. Monday, June 26, a bicyclist collided with a parked vehicle in La Quinta. The crash occurred on northbound Avenida Bermudas. The bicyclist later died from his injuries at JFK Memorial Hospital.

Coachella Valley Association of Governments Funds Bicyclist and Pedestrian Safety Projects

Following a deadly year for bicyclists and pedestrians, the Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG) is taking action. The association is considering 10 projects to improve bicyclist and pedestrian safety throughout the region. The areas under consideration include Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs, bike lanes on Avenue 48 from Jefferson to Jackson in Indio, and traffic signals at Vista Chino and Via Miraleste in Palm Springs. Read the full list of proposed projects here.

According to the Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG), 18.6 pedestrian and bicycle accidents occur in the selected areas each year. The projects that are selected will need to be completed within a year.

“We applaud CVAG for prioritizing bicycle and pedestrian safety in the wake of these deadly accidents,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
