November 3, 2011
A Banning, California, woman, and the passenger in her car, were trapped in the vehicle after driving off the edge of a cliff and falling over 100 feet. According to KESQ News, the accident occurred on State Route 60, around 8:30 AM Monday morning.
Authorities who responded to the accident say that the 21-year-old woman was driving westbound in the left lane of the highway. She was attempting to maneuver a turn in the road when she suddenly lost control of the vehicle. The car careened into the far right lane of the four-lane highway, and went over the edge of a cliff, coming to rest 100 feet below.
Rescue crews shut down the highway for several hours as they attempted to cut the trapped pair out of the vehicle and pull them to safety. Both were taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center by ambulance, where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries and released.
Investigators believe that wearing seat belts at the time of the crash may have been the only thing that saved their lives.
