6 Ways to Stay Safe During a Summer Power Outage

Police have arrested the hit-and-run driver suspected of a crash that caused a power outage in Victorville last Sunday. Officials say 30-year-old Edward Provencio crashed his van into a power pole at Hesperia Road and City View Road. When Southern California Edison arrived to secure the scene, there was no one in the vehicle.

The power outage affected 180 customers and lasted until about 6 p.m. Sunday. Provencio was located and arrested Sunday evening in connection with the crash.

Losing power is an inconvenience any time of the year, but it is especially frustrating during extreme weather. If your home suffers a power outage during the hot summer season, here are some tips to help you get through it:

  1. Stay away from downed power lines, as they could still be electrified.
  2. Keep yourself well hydrated throughout the day.
  3. Wear loose-fitting, light clothing that will keep you cool.
  4. If you have access to a pool, this is a good time to go for a dip and cool down.
  5. Check on neighbors and friends, especially those most at risk—the elderly and those with medical conditions.
  6. Drive carefully, as traffic signals could have been affected by the power outage.

“Getting into a crash involving a power line is extremely dangerous for the driver, and it can negatively impact hundreds of people by causing a power outage. Drivers need to be especially cautious when driving anywhere near power lines,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
