A wrong-way collision in Riverside left three people seriously injured early Sunday morning. The accident occurred on the 215 Freeway around 1:30 a.m. Police say a driver was traveling north on the southbound side of the freeway when they collided with another vehicle head-on. Both vehicles sustained extensive front-end damage

Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extricate at least two people from the accident. Paramedics rushed two critically injured victims to a trauma center. A third person suffered major injuries and was taken to the hospital.

Did Driver Impairment Cause Wrong-Way Collision?

The crash blocked all lanes of traffic while first responders assisted the victims and cleared the scene. Police continue to investigate the wrong-way collision. It is unclear whether alcohol or drugs were involved in the accident.

How is California Combating Wrong-Way Crashes?

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) and Caltrans are working together to reduce wrong-way crashes through a program currently being tested in Sacramento and Yolo County. While wrong-way crashes do not occur often—they comprise only 1% of all traffic accidents—they are highly likely to result in fatalities or serious injuries. Additionally, alcohol frequently contributes to these types of accidents.

“Our prayers are with the victims as they recover from their serious injuries,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
