Two people died in a Twentynine Palms rollover crash Saturday afternoon. The single-vehicle crash occurred just after 4 p.m. on Indian Trail near Pearl Springs Avenue. According to a witness, a white Ford Explorer was heading west on Indian Trail at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control. The SUV then rolled over off the roadway and into the open desert. Two occupants of the vehicle were ejected during the crash.

One occupant, 49-year-old Yovonne Navarette, died at the scene. The other person ejected, 21-year-old David Garduno, was rushed to Hi-Desert Medical Center in Joshua Tree. He died shortly after arriving at the hospital. Both of the victims were residents of Hemet.

Two other passengers in the vehicle suffered minor injuries in the crash. Officials transported them to Desert Regional Medical Center for treatment.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is handling the investigation. Speeding was likely a factor in the Twentynine Palms rollover crash.

Does Speeding Cause Rollover Crashes?

Rollover crashes are often extremely violent and account for nearly 35% of all fatalities from passenger vehicle accidents. According to SaferCar.gov, excessive speeding contributes to 40% of all fatal rollover crashes. In addition, nearly 75% of fatal rollover crashes occurred in areas where the posted speed limit was 55 mph or higher.

“Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the victims. Please follow the speed limit out there on these desert highways. They are there to protect you,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
