One person was killed in a major multi-vehicle collision near Whitewater Thursday night. The fatal accident occurred on eastbound I-10, west of the Highway 111 exit around 9:30 p.m. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a 2012 Toyota Corolla traveling east swerved left and struck the center median guardrail.

The crash impact sent the vehicle back onto the eastbound lanes, and it came to a stop in the No. 3 lane. Two minutes later, a tractor-trailer crashed into the back of the Toyota, pushing it south. The Toyota then struck a Hyundai Sonata that was stopped on the right shoulder.

The driver of the Toyota, 18-year-old Daisy Diaz Gomez, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Hyundai, 19-year-old Jordan Wilcox, suffered minor injuries. He was treated at Desert Regional Medical Center. The big rig driver was not treated for any injuries.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the major multi-vehicle collision. It is still unclear what caused Gomez to swerve and hit the guardrail in the first place.

“Our hearts go out to this young woman’s family and friends. These large trucks are barreling down the highway at high speeds, and can take more than 500 feet to come to a stop,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
