What is the 100 Deadliest Days Study?

Memorial Day marked the start of the “100 Deadliest Days,” the stretch during the summer months when teen crash deaths have historically spiked. Over the past five years, more than 5,000 people have died in crashes involving a teenage driver during this 100-day period.

Compared to other days of the year, fatalities involving teenage driver-involved crashes increase by 16% during these 100 Deadliest Days. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety recently released a study in conjunction with University of Iowa, in which they analyzed more than 2,200 dash camera videos showing the moments leading up to a crash involving a teenage driver. The study found that nearly 60% of teen crashes are related to distracted driving.

According to the study, the top three distractions for teenage drivers during the moments leading up to a crash are:

  1. Talking to or attending to passengers – 15% of crashes
  2. Talking, texting or otherwise operating a cell phone – 12% of crashes
  3. Looking at or attending to something inside the vehicle – 11% of crashes

The study also found that teens are more likely to be texting or looking down at their phone than talking on it prior to crashing.

“With teens sending an average of 80 text messages per day and constantly checking in on social media, teenage drivers can be very dangerous on the road if they are distracted,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group. “If you’re the parent of a teenager who will be driving this summer, make a point to talk to them about the dangers of distracted driving.”
