1 Dead, 1 Injured in Tour de Palm Springs Crash

A bicyclist was killed and another seriously injured during the Tour de Palm Springs Saturday. Police say a driver crashed into two bicyclists while driving 100 mph down Dillon Road. The driver did not appear to be under the influence, but officers are still awaiting test results.

The driver, 21-year-old Ronnie Huerta Jr., was traveling far over the 50 mph speed limit on Dillon Road when he lost control of his Ford 500. His vehicle entered the north shoulder, then Huerta overcorrected and entered the eastbound lane, where he struck the eastbound bicyclists.

Bicyclist Dead at the Scene

Bicyclist Mark Kristofferson, 49, died at the scene. A female bicyclist struck by the vehicle was airlifted to Desert Regional Medical Center for severe injuries. The driver was treated for a head injury at the scene, before being arrested for vehicular manslaughter. He posted bail Sunday and is due back in court in April.

California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers say Huerta was driving recklessly. Moreover, he should have exercised more caution given the event that was quite obviously going on.

“Our condolences go out to the victim’s family and friends. This driver clearly acted recklessly and should be held accountable,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
